Natural Childbirth
Education & Preparation

Your step-by-step guide to the best possible birth...

Childbirth education and preparation resources have exploded in recent years. In fact, the amount of information out there can be downright overwhelming. What you need is someone to help you navigate and filter all that information so you can focus on the best of what's available.

That's what I've broken down for you here: The six essential steps to setting yourself up for the best possible birth experience. Take your time and enjoy this journey toward an inspired birth...

1. Stay healthy and low-risk with a natural pregnancy:

This step is the foundation for all the other preparation you do. When you take the time to nurture and nourish yourself during pregnancy, you'll have the physical, mental and emotional strength and stamina to face your labor.

Besides, there is no better time than pregnancy to adopt a more natural, healthy and holistic way of life. Click on the link above for your guide to a healthy and natural pregnancy.

2. Read books about natural pregnancy and childbirth:

Nothing compares to a good book for a comprehensive overview of all things related to pregnancy and birth. Your inspiration and understanding will steadily grow as you dive into your reading selections. Click the above link to see my recommendations for the best pregnancy books to guide you through pregnancy, labor, birth and beyond.

3. Watch childbirth videos and documentaries:

Video documentaries about birth are an entertaining way to get informed, inspired and prepared for giving birth. They're also probably the best way to initially engage and involve your partner in the childbirth education process. You'll see several in your birthing class, but check one or two out early in pregnancy so you're both on the same page right from the start.

Click above to link to view clips from the best documentaries about childbirth, many of which I show in my natural childbirth class. A variety of childbirth videos, including water births, home and hospital births are here.

4. Hand-select your prenatal care and birth team:

Most women are surprised at all of the choices available to them when it comes to their prenatal care and childbirth options. Even more surprising is what a difference it can make in the safety and quality of your birth experience.

Chosen consciously and carefully, your prenatal care providers can help set you up for the experience of a lifetime. Choose poorly and it can mean a journey into motherhood that is mediocre at best, unsafe and traumatic at worst. Click the link above for information on choosing the best care providers and birth place.

5. Take a really good birthing class:

Not all birthing classes are created equal, and good ones can be hard to find. A good class can really make the difference for many couples, especially if you plan to give birth in the hospital.

In my own birthing classes, I've seen fearful or indifferent fathers-to-be transform into strong, empowered advocates for their partners and babies. Mothers-to-be grow in trust and confidence supported by their partners and surrounded by other like-minded couples. Click the above link for guidelines on choosing a birthing class.

6. Write an effective birth plan:

Writing a birth plan should be a thoughtful process that evolves over time as you discover and refine your unique preferences and priorities for birth. Birth plans can be highly effective tools for clarifying your wishes and communicating them to care providers. However, they do have some limitations and disadvantages.

Click the link above for tips, topics to include and how to avoid common birth plan pitfalls.

.........................

Once again, don't get overwhelmed with the childbirth education and preparation process. You'll have lots of help and support along the way and a big reward to look forward to.
