What Causes Morning Sickness?

Theories abound about what causes morning sickness. In reality, there are most likely several factors at work, both external and internal.

Some women experience no morning sickness, others have it only in the first trimester and still others suffer their entire pregnancy.

Evolutionary biologist Marjie Profet proposes in her book "Protecting Your Baby to Be" that pregnancy nausea, often triggered by aversions to certain foods and odors, is nature's way of protecting the fetus from toxins in the fragile first trimester.

Others suggest causes ranging from vitamin deficiencies to psychological factors to unstable blood sugar. It's also interesting to note that morning sickness is experienced in Western culture with more frequency and severity than is reported in other cultures.

Given the above, it's easy to see how our modern diet and lifestyle contributes in a multitude of ways to the phenomenon of pregnancy and morning sickness. The wide variety of food choices we have, including highly processed foods and foods fairly new to the human diet, make intuitive food selection challenging at best. Less reliance on innate and generational wisdom and more dependence on a medical or scientific model may also add to a more acute awareness and perception of nausea in early pregnancy as a "condition." Finally, higher stress levels and a fast-paced lifestyle that leaves little time for extra rest and self care during pregnancy is another likely factor.

Simple awareness of potential factors in the cause of morning sickness can help point you in the right direction of what might be helpful for you. Notice which of these grounding principles resonates with you as it relates to your experience of pregnancy nausea:

  • Connection to intuitive, innate wisdom
  • Connection to emotional guidance
  • Nourishment of body, mind and spirit

From these principles will flow the specific solutions and remedies for easing morning sickness.
