Pregnancy Yeast Infection
Yeast Infection Pregnancy
Pregnancy yeast infection is most common in the second trimester, but can occur at anytime throughout a pregnancy. It is caused by overgrowth of the yeast organism called candida albicans. While it is healthy and normal for this yeast to be found on and inside the body, under certain conditions candida yeast can grow to levels that cause inflammation and dis-ease. For a variety of reasons, yeast infections are more common in pregancy. Overgrowth typically occurs in the vaginal tract, causing pain and itching. Chronic yeast overgrowth in pregnancy also increases the likelihood of carrying Group Beta-Strep (GBS) bacteria which may necessitate IV antibiotics during labor. While over the counter or prescription yeast infection treatments kill the candida and provide symptom relief, they do nothing to support re-balancing of the vaginal flora or preventing recurrence of the infection. Alternatively, a holistic approach to prevention and treatment can bring optimal balance to the body's flora (a.k.a. the various microorganisms populating the body).Natural remedies for yeast infection during pregnancy are an important component for restoring probiotic balance to the body.
