Effective natural remedies for stretch marks must reflect a holistic mindset. Healthy skin tone needs the foundation of a good pregnancy diet first and foremost. Then the external skin treatments you try will simply support and protect the glow and health that comes from within...

Try the following to maximize skin elasticity and prevent pregnancy stretch marks:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other healthy liquids. Also consume high water content fruits and vegetables, such as celery and cucumbers, to keep your skin well hydrated.
  • Get plenty of high quality fats: Without smooth, fatty cell membranes to hold in all that water you're drinking, your skin will remain dull, dry and prone to stretch marks. To keep skin strong and supple, natural saturated fats are amazing! Consume plenty of coconut oil and butter from grass-fed animals (Good for your skin and great for baby's growing brain as well!) Cold-pressed olive oil, avocados and flax oil are also healthy fat sources.
  • Whip up a homemade pregnancy stretch mark cream: Moisturize skin from the outside with a combination of warmed cocoa butter and coconut oil to be very effective in my pregnancies. Combine in a glass jar and use a baby wipes warmer wrapped around it to keep it liquid and toasty warm. Other oils such as almond or pure vitamin E are also wonderful additions.
  • Get your Vitamin E: This can be taken internally or applied externally. It works to prevent as well as treat already existing stretch marks. It increases skin's firmness and elasticity and facilitates skin cell regeneration. You may take a supplement of Vitamin E complex and/or consume vitamin E rich foods such as kiwis, mangos, almonds, sunflower seeds, tomatoes and spinach.
  • Do lateral stretching: Daily side stretches gently stretch the skin during pregnancy to keep up with the growth of your abdomen. Triangle is one very effective prenatal yoga pose that incorporates a nice lateral stretch.
