Headaches During Pregnancy

Headaches during pregnancy are a big pain! Often related to hormones, toxicity or stress, there are natural and holistic ways to deal with the pain and heal any underlying causes.

Although Tylenol during pregnancy is given a GRAS designation (generally regarded as safe), it's still a good idea to avoid drugs whenever possible when you are pregnant. As a guiding principle, I encourage my clients to seek out the most natural, least invasive options and leave medication as a carefully considered last resort.

Natural Remedies for Headaches During Pregnancy

  • Make sure you are adequately hydrated: When you feel a headache coming on, drink a big glass of water. You should be drinking to thirst, which should amount to six to eight, 8-ounce glasses of water and other fluids daily.
  • Be cautious with caffeine during pregnancy: Excess caffeine as well as caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches. Be sure to monitor your intake and wean yourself slowly if you're trying to cut down.
  • Take a walk: A brisk walk can also ward off an oncoming headache, while regular exercise can help prevent them altogether. Walking and other forms of exercise oxygenate the body and stimulate circulation. This helps to flush out toxins, releases endorphins and promotes overall wellness.
  • Take a nap: A nap will often relieve an acute headache during pregnancy. Regularly getting adequate rest and sleep will help prevent headaches.
  • Relaxation, especially of the face and neck muscles: This is both soothing and relieves underlying muscle stress that may be causing or exacerbating headache pain. I recommend laying down with a washcloth on your forehead that is wet with cold water and a few drops of lavender oil. Then relax the various muscles of your face and neck: scalp, forehead, eyes, jaw, tongue, throat, back of neck, etc. Focus on a specific muscle group on your inhale and consciously relax them on your exhale.
  • Consult a chiropractor, acupuncurist or other alternative health care provider: Many women experience relief from their pregnancy headaches, as well as experiencing other unexpected benefits from these natural treatments.

As always, don't hesitate to contact your health care provider of choice when headaches during pregnancy are persistent and/or severe.
